MISSION APPLIED BERKELEY • A BGA × BISG PARTNERSHIP
→ Founded 2026
A breakthrough isn’t a capability — until it reaches the field.
We’re founding Mission Applied @ Berkeley to close that distance: a partnership between the Berkeley Gateway Accelerator (BGA) and the Berkeley Institute for Security & Governance (BISG).
When the nation faced its gravest security challenges, it turned to Berkeley — from the WWII-era cyclotron to the National Laboratory system inspired by the RadLab. Mission Applied continues that lineage.
THE BERKELEY LINEAGE
1931
Lawrence builds the cyclotron
The Radiation Laboratory turns physics into national capability.
1940s
The National Lab system
A model for mobilizing science in the service of the country.
Dec. 2018
Berkeley Space Center
36-acre innovation and research hub located at Moffett Field.
Today
Hacking for Defense
Berkeley classrooms wired directly to operational need.
2026
Mission Applied @ Berkeley
The next chapter — deep tech to field-ready capability.
WHAT WE’RE FOUNDING
The only partnership of its kind — and the one the moment demands.
Who
Mission Applied fuses Berkeley’s deep-tech ecosystem and venture capability with an operationally-led governance institute purpose-built for homeland and national-security priorities.
It is neither a company nor a lab. It is a platform — a supercharged R&D and commercialization space where technical, entrepreneurial, operational, and governance expertise sit side by side.
Why Now
Deep tech is advancing faster than government can identify, evaluate, and adopt promising breakthroughs. The gap between a capability need and a field-ready prototype is where advantage is won or lost.
We build a direct path from Berkeley’s benches to national security and resilience — de-risking technology at every stage from basic research to fielded capability.
ONE ROOF • ONE ECOSYSTEM
COMMUNITY
Convene the Ecosystem
Innovator events, hackathons, Grand Challenges and design sprints bringing students, founders, and investors into the same room.
GUIDANCE
Advise from experience
Mentor-matching with operators and practitioners, office hours with subject-matter experts, and workshops led by staff advisors and BGA fellows.
RESOURCES
Equip the build
Course programming (H4D, NSF I-Corp, Deep-Tech Innovation Lab), shared convening space, and funding pathways — from DIU commercialization fellowships to a VC network including BGA.

THE MISSION
Close the pain-to-prototype gap — turning breakthrough technology into field-ready, dual-use capability that strengthens public safety and national security.
JOIN THE FOUNDING
Build the bridge from Berkeley’s labs and classrooms to the nation’s hardest problems.
We’re assembling founding partners, fellows, and mission sponsors. If deep tech, national security, and resilience are your passion — let’s talk.
